Iran determined to cement ties with Azerbaijan/ Iran ready to play a role in helping to strengthen ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia, establish stability in region

The President described the relations with the friendly and neighbourly country of Azerbaijan good and brotherly and said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to develop relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan and we hope to seize the opportunity in the new international conditions to further develop relations between the two countries."

Speaking on Wednesday in a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, Dr Hassan Rouhani referred to the clear positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and expressed satisfaction with the liberation of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and the establishment of a ceasefire.

Dr Rouhani also referred to Iran's plan to end the conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region by sending special envoys to Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, and announced the Islamic Republic's readiness to play a constructive role in strengthening the ceasefire between the two countries and establishing stability in the region.

Emphasising the need to use the borders of Iran and Azerbaijan to develop economic and trade cooperation, the President added, "Given the end of the Trump era in the United States and the beginning of a new government in the country, we feel that countries will have better conditions for cooperation".

Dr Rouhani further stated Iran's readiness to participate in the reconstruction of the liberated areas of Azerbaijan, saying, "Considering the neighbourhood of the two countries and the facilities available in Iran, Iran's presence and participation in the reconstruction of the areas affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh war will benefit both countries".

Referring to previous agreements between Iran and Azerbaijan, including the Rasht-Astara railway project, the President stressed the need to accelerate the implementation and operation of the agreements and said, "Conditions are ripe for the implementation of joint cooperation projects agreed between the two countries, including Khoda Afarin Dam and the construction of the power plant, and the two countries can further develop their cooperation in the fields of industry, science, pharmacy and other sectors."

During the meeting, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister praised the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and said, "We consider Iran a good friend and neighbour and the Azerbaijani President and officials are determined to develop relations with Iran."

"Azerbaijan's borders with Iran are a border of friendship and development, and we believe that the restoration of these borders can lead to new cooperation projects," Jeyhun Bayramov said, referring to the liberation of the occupied territories and the revival of the 132-kilometre border with Iran.

Emphasising the development and deepening of relations with Iran in various political, economic and trade fields, Bayramov said that the implementation of the Rasht-Astara railway project will increase economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and expressed hope that with the new international conditions and the removal of obstacles caused by US sanctions, joint cooperation projects between the two countries to be implemented and operational quickly.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister also condemned the assassination of an Iranian scientist, Martyr Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, and stressed, "The assassination of a scientist is not acceptable in any way and we strongly condemn this action".
