Speaking with the Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Bin Mohamad by telephone on Thursday, Dr Hassan Rouhani referred to the successful holding of elections in the country and offered congratulations to the Prime Minister on his election, saying: “I am confident that in your term of office, we will witness further development of relations between Tehran and Kuala Lumpur”.

Stating that there are good opportunities in Iran for investment, he continued: “The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to develop and cement relations and cooperation with Malaysia and we are ready to further develop economic, political and cultural relations between the two countries”.

Iran and Malaysia should cooperate with each other based on basic principles of foreign policy to promote peace and stability in the region and the world and fight terrorism and extremism, he said, adding: “Serious combat against terrorism is a principle that the Islamic Republic of Iran has emphasised in the recent years and today, we are happy that ISIS has been defeated with the help we gave to the people of Iraq and Syria”.

President Rouhani also went on to express congratulations to the Malaysian government and people on Eid al-Fitr, and said: “We must attempt to introduce the merciful face of Islam to the people around the world and show the young in Muslim communities and other countries that Islam is the religion of kindness, peace and peaceful coexistence”.

Mentioning that the US administration pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is approved by the United Nations, in a unilateral move against all international regulations, he added: “WE believe that the US’ unilateralism and imposing their own internal rules on outside of their borders is against international laws and the freedom of nations, and we are still working on continuing our cooperation to maintain the deal, hoping that all countries help and cooperate in implementing the law”.

Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Bin Mohamad congratulated the Iranian nation and government on Eid al-Fitr and said: “The policy of Malaysian government is to promote inclusive relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

He also referred to the importance of taking advantage of the capabilities and potentials in Iran and Malaysia in various areas of cooperation, including industrial, construction, knowledge, science and technology, automotive, health, and other fields and stressed the development of cooperation between private companies and the business community.

We are ready to cooperate with Iran in all fields related to fighting terrorism and extremism, as well as development of peace and stability in the world, said Mahathir Bin Mohamad, adding: “We must attempt to improve the unpleasant picture that the public opinion of the world has about Islam and Muslims”.

“Iran’s policy for interaction and cooperation with the world is very good and desirable, while we believe that unilateralism decreases cooperation and trust among countries around the world,” he continued.
