Iran, Turkmenistan must tap ample opportunities for deepening ties, cooperation/Good decisions made to benefit both nations

President Rouhani described Turkmenistan as a friend, brother country of the Islamic Republic of Iran and stressed that the two countries must take advantage of the opportunities and potentials to deepen relations in various fields.

Speaking after the ceremony of signing 13 pacts between Tehran and Ashgabat on Tuesday, Dr Hassan Rouhani said: “Very constructive and effective negotiations were held between the authorities of the two countries, and we discussed all economic, cultural and political issues, making good decisions that benefit both nations”.

Referring to cultural, historical and religious commonalities between the two Iranian and Turkmen nations, he said: “We are determined to take the best advantage of all the existing potentials for deepening and developing relations between the two countries”.

On agreements on energy, transportation and transit, Dr Rouhani said: “Iran and Turkmenistan are two powerful countries in the field of energy and it was decided that the two countries promote cooperation in this field more than before”.

He referred to the opening of Sarakhs Bridge and its role in cementing relations, saying: “With the elimination of the obstacles related to transportation, cooperation between the two countries will further develop, paving the way for more cooperation between the private sectors”.

“We must increase the level of business and trade and in doing so, a new line for power transfer from Sarakhs to Merv will be constructed by Iranian companies,” Rouhani added.

He also said: “Iranian companies active in the field of transport and roads will cooperate in carrying out two important projects, Ashgabat-Turkmenabad, and Sarakhs-Tajan roads”.

He referred to discussions on gas swap and cooperation in the field of energy in Caspian Sea, adding: “We had discussions in the field of exporting busses to Turkmenistan and deepening cooperation between the two countries in cultural and scientific fields as well as new technologies”.

On regional and international issues, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: “We also discussed fighting terrorism, ways of strengthening stability and security in the region, and also humanitarian plans and good agreements were made between the two countries”.

The President of Turkmenistan stressed that his country was determined to deepen ties with Iran in all fields of mutual interest, saying: “High-level negotiations between the two countries in a friendly, brotherly, and transparent atmosphere, replete with mutual respect and good neighbourly were held”.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow also said: “Deepening relations between Iran and Turkmenistan is very important for us and I want to take this opportunity to appreciate Dr Rouhani for his efforts for promoting cooperation”.
