"Tehran and Yerevan can take advantage of common culture and history to take positive steps serving both nations and the region," said President Rouhani in a meeting with his Armenian counterpart, President Serzh Sargsyan on Sunday in Tehran.

Stressing that Tehran is willing to further develop relations with neighbouring countries, including Armenia, he said: "The two countries have ample potentials to cement ties in various economic and cultural fields, as well as transportation, energy, tourism and transit, activation of which will be beneficial to the interests of the two nations".

On the importance of stability and security in the region against terrorism, Dr Rouhani said: "After terrorists are defeated completely in Iraq and Syria, there is this possibility that they try to spread to other parts of the region, therefore, we must all be vigilant and alert about this threat, including in the Caucasus and Central Asia".

Mentioning the issue of Karabakh and political solutions to the issue, the President said: "For the Islamic Republic of Iran, it is very important to have full security around its borders and we hope that with attempts and initiatives by two neighbouring countries of Armenia and Azerbaijan, we witness the peaceful end of this issue".

At the same meeting, the President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan said: "In recent months, the people of Iran chose a president that has taken a successful, important policy in the past years".

Referring to closer and deeper ties between the two countries in recent years, he said: "Despite improvements in relations, still we believe that we have not been able to improve economic relations to the same level that political relations are now".

We are determined to establish more active, extensive relations and cooperation with Iran in all economic fields, said President Sargsyan adding: "Tehran and Yerevan can further deepen ties in various fields, especially energy, trade, and transportation".
