At the meeting that took place on Tuesday in Tehran, Dr Rouhani continued: "Iran and Benin have both good potentials to develop ties and similar problems in their regions. We have been witnessing world powers' intervention such as violence and terrorism in both the Middle East and Africa in recent years".

He went on to express hope that in the term of office of the new Ambassador of Benin to Tehran, the two countries benefit from more cooperation and relations and said: "Iran, Benin and other African countries can cooperate and consult more on regional and international issues in addition to mutual relations".

He also said: "The only way to resolve the issues of the Middle East and Africa is political dialogue and cooperation and consultation with African countries is essential for confronting with extremism and terrorism".

Describing the logic of terrorism as imposing force, arms and violence on nations, President Rouhani said: "We believe that people themselves must choose their political paths and lives and the young population must be taught that freedom of choice is the foundation of advancement and progress".

"The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes cooperation and consultation among scholars, academics and intellectuals to help resolve regional issues," Dr Rouhani added.

He also referred to Iranian experts and engineers' work on projects in Benin and continued: "Certainly, such cooperation can both promote friendships between the two Iranian and Beninese nations and familiarise the Beninese and African young populations with Iranian experts' capabilities".

At the meeting, the new Ambassador of Benin to Tehran, Naim Akibo presented his letter of credence to President Rouhani and said: "Iran and Benin have ample potentials to develop cooperation".

Praising Dr Rouhani's efforts to establish peace and stability in the region, he added "Benin is willing to take advantage of Iranian experts' capabilities and technical knowledge".

Africa and Benin need to cooperate with Iran because Iran has a more profound understanding of African countries' problems and issues, said Akibo.

He also expressed his condolences over the recent terrorist attack in Tehran.
