President at Mashhad Airport:
Developing east important for gov't/Attending Martyr's Day conference one key aim of visit
President Rouhani arrived in Mashhad's Shahid Hashemi Nejad Airport on Wednesday in order to open a number of construction and service projects, and attend a conference on Martyr's Day.
Upon arrival at Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan Razavi province in northeastern Iran, Dr Rouhani was welcomed by the Deputy Custodian of Astan Quds Razavi, the Governor General of Khorasan Razavi and a number of local officials
Speaking to reporters at the airport, Dr Rouhani underscored the importance of developing the eastern part of the country and said that the government attached great weight to the matter.
He continued: "Developing the eastern part of the country is very important for the government because it gives balance to the development process of the country and national security".
"The latest visit to Sistan and Baluchistan province, and the current visit to Khorasan Razavi province have been made in this regard," Dr Rouhani continued.
He added: "Also, one of the aims of this visit is to attend Martyr's Day conference in the holy city of Mashhad, which has been named 'the Cultural Capital City of the World of Islam'".
On the projects to be opened during the visit, he said: "During the provincial trip to this region, a total number of 129 plans and projects have been approved, 44 projects of which have been fully completed and the about 60 of them have had more than 50% physical progress and we hope that all the projects be operationalised gradually for the people to use them and bring prosperity to the province and the city of Mashhad".
The President is scheduled to make pilgrimage to Imam Reza's (RA) holy shrine and attend a conference on Martyr's Day. He is also going to open a number of construction and service projects.
Dr Rouhani is accompanied by a number of cabinet ministers.
