"It is the goal of all friends of Syria to restore peace and stability to the country to let the people decide for their own future with ease," said President Rouhani in a meeting with the Prime Minister of Syria, Imad Mohammad Deeb Khamis on Wednesday in Tehran.

Describing Aleppo's liberation and establishment of a cease-fire as two key steps in establishing peace and stability in Syria, Dr Rouhani expressed hope that Astana meeting set a good start for real Syrian-Syrian negotiations.

The enemies of the region never thought that such successes could be achieved in Syria, said Rouhani adding: "Iranian government, nation and Supreme Leader have always stood by the Syrian people and will continue to do so because the Syrian people are fighting terrorists who are on the wrong path".

Stating that if the terrorists and their supporters would win, a dangerous path and an unknown fate would await the region, he said: "The Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria has had friendly relations from the beginning of the Islamic Revolution and we will stay committed to these ties".

Iran-Syria relations are deep and effective, said Rouhani adding that the potentials and opportunities of developing ties in all fields should be tapped.

At the same meeting, the Prime Minister of Syria, Imad Mohammad Deeb Khamis conveyed the message of condolence of the Syrian government and nation over Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani's demise.

He said: "Victory in Aleppo was the result of resistance and firmness of the Syrian nation and the sacrifices of the Syrian Army and the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution's selfless support".

"Today, the Syrian government and nation are determined to stand against terrorists and restore security to the country," he said.

He added: "Syria welcomes any initiative for restoring stability and security, contributing to success of Syrian-Syrian negotiations".

Referring to Iran's significant and effective role in establishing peace and stability to the region, he stressed that both countries should develop and deepen strategic ties in all fields.
