President in a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart:

People of Iran, Armenia belong to the same civilisation/Agreeing to develop relations in energy, transit, trade, banking ties/Attempting to establish free trade between Iran and EAEU member countries

Referring to an agreement made between Iran and Armenia to develop relations in the fields of energy, transit, trade and banking ties, President Rouhani said: "We agreed to provide Iran with the opportunity to enjoy a special place in trade ties with the member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)".

In the joint press conference that was held on Wednesday in Armenian capital, Yerevan, Dr Rouhani said: "Our relations with Armenia has always been friendly and warm since its independence 25 years ago".

He went on to stress that Iran and Armenia belong to the same civilisation, adding: "In the 11th government, relations between the two countries have always been developing".

Referring to potentials of developing Tehran-Yerevan ties, he said: "Some of these potentials have been tapped and some others should be put into action in the coming months and years".

In this visit, we decided to develop ties, and deepen relations in gas and electricity, said Rouhani.

He added: "Armenia and Iran can complete transit line connecting the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea. We can connect the Persian Gulf to the Back Sea through roads and railway" which can benefit the people of the region and other parts of the world.

"In the field of environment and River Aras, which is a great legacy for Iran and Armenia and other countries of the region, it was decided that Mr President give the necessary orders to let us witness solve the pollution crisis," he continued.

Dr Rouhani continued: "It was also decided that we facilitate trade ties between the two countries and provide the merchants and investors with facilities in this regard".

He also said that the two Presidents discussed and agreed to promote relations in the fields of science and technology, as well as academic ties.

Referring to ample opportunities to develop ties, he also said: "It was also agreed to provide the banks with more facilities".

"On the relations between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Armenia being amongst them, we agreed to provide Iran with the opportunity to enjoy a special place in trade ties with the member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)," Rouhani added.

He went on to say: "Regarding issues and security in the region, we also had discussions with the President of Armenia. Armenia and the Azerbaijan Republic are two friend and neighbouring countries for us and we hope to see the Karabakh issue be settled through negotiation and political ways".

"Without a doubt, military option is not the way to achieve peace and we should follow the path of discussion within the framework of international regulations to witness peace and stability in the region," Rouhani added.

On terrorism, he said: "The issue of terrorism was discussed as another important issue for both countries. Fortunately, both countries enjoy enough and complete security but, in the meantime, we should cooperate in dealing with terrorism".

Dr Rouhani continued: "Regarding Iraq and Syria, which are dealing with the scourge of terrorism today, we have common viewpoints with regard to eradicating terrorism and delivering humanitarian aid, especially to the people of Aleppo".

At the same press conference, the President of Armenia said: "Without a doubt, the documents which have been signed today and agreements which have been reached, will give a new charge to raising Armenian-Iranian cooperation to a new qualitative level".

"Today we had systemic and substantial discussions around various issues of the bilateral agenda. We reiterated our commitment aimed at realizing joint projects, highlighted the regular holding of political consultations, discussed issues related to boosting ties between business circles in economic, energy, transportation, agriculture, education, healthcare, and cultural fields," President Serzh Sargsyan said.

He continued: "As the result of the deal between Armenia and Iran, the exchange of gas and energy will continue".

"We exchanged views regarding the creation of a Persian Gulf-Black Sea international transport and transit corridor, which will facilitate international freight shipment, will enable Iranian products to enter the European market at minimal transportation expenses," he added.

We exchanged views on the implementation of historical agreements over Iran's nuclear program, said the President of Armenia, adding: "I am confident that this agreement will open new development horizons for Iran's hard-working and creative people by boosting cooperation in Armenia, as well as the region".

"We also discussed the situation in the Middle East, the fight against terrorism and international efforts aimed at settling the situation. In this sense the adoption of the resolution over the humanitarian situation in Aleppo by the UN Security Council is important. Of course, Armenia is, first of all, concerned with the security provision issue of the Armenian community in Syria and especially in Aleppo," the Armenian President said.

We highly appreciate Iran's balanced stance over the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict based on in the international law, said President Sargsyan, adding: "The Karabakh conflict cannot have a military solution and stated that any step aimed at escalating the situation and spreading instability in the region is impermissible".
