President in the meeting of high-ranking delegations of Iran and Vietnam:

Closer ties with East Asia, esp. Vietnam a top foreign policy for Iran/Both sides stress fivefold trade increase

Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam underscored deepening of Tehran-Hanoi ties in all field of mutual interest, especially a fivefold increase in trade to over $2bn a year.

President Rouhani attended the meeting of high-ranking delegations of Iran and Vietnam on Thursday in Hanoi and said: “Developing closer ties with East Asia, especially Vietnam is one of Iran’s top foreign policies”.

Emphasising post-JCPOA opportunities, Dr Rouhani said: “Iran is ready to promote relations with Vietnam in fields such as energy, modern technology, medicine, agriculture, fishery, and petrochemical complexes and refineries”.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has good progress in road construction, steel and building materials manufacture, power plants, as well as energy and water transmission lines and is ready to provide Vietnam with technical and engineering services,” he added.

He also voiced Iran’s readiness to cement agricultural ties with Vietnam, including extraterritorial cultivation.

Stressing the importance of swift implementation of the memorandum of understanding drafted in the 8th meeting of joint cooperation commission of Iran and Vietnam, the President continued: “We are ready to hold the 9th meeting of the joint commission in Tehran”.

Regarding tourism cooperation, Dr Rouhani also said: “With regard to close ties between the two nations and governments, we need to prepare the required facilities for strengthening tourism”.

He also referred to common viewpoints and opinions by the two countries in major international issues, and added: “Unfortunately, westerners exploit issues such as human rights as a means, and we should be united against these double standards”.

“We are willing to boost and develop close economic ties between ASEAN and ECO,” continued Rouhani.

He further noted that the two countries should develop parliamentary and banking relations.

At the meeting, President of Vietnam expressed happiness over President Rouhani’s visit to Vietnam and said: “Hanoi is determined to develop ties with Tehran in all field of mutual interest”.

President Trần Đại Quang added: “Iranian nation’s bravery is admired by the Vietnamese nation and we are very happy about Iran’s progress in all fields under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s guidance and your Excellency’s management”.

“The two countries have ample capacities and abilities and we should use this opportunity to boost annual trade to over $2 billion,” he continued.
