“The main goal of Tehran’s support of Iraqi government, army and popular forces is liberating the people from Daesh terrorists and completely clearing the country of terrorists and we will spare no effort in doing so,” said President Rouhani in the meeting that was held on Wednesday local time on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly in New York.

He added: “Iran has always stood by Iraqi government and people, especially during recent ups and downs, and will continue supporting Iraqi people until the end”.

Expressing satisfaction over developing ties between the two countries, Dr Rouhani said: “Tehran is determined to further develop ties with Baghdad in all fields”.

“I hope in the near future, the two sides can facilitate people’s travel through abolition of visas,” continued Rouhani.

At the meeting, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi described Tehran-Baghdad ties strategic and beneficial to both parties and the region.

Referring to Iran’s cooperation in combatting terrorism, he said: “Currently, thousands of popular forces are fighting Daesh and these terrorist groups are nearing the end of their lives in Iraq and we are attempting to clear the path for liberating Mosul”.
