President at a meeting with leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq:

Iran to stand by Iraqi people, gov’t in defending holy shrines/Deepening Tehran-Baghdad ties beneficial to both nations, region

The latest victories of the Iraqi government and nation over terrorist is a great achievement, said President Rouhani at a meeting with the Leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Seyyed Ammar al-Hakim on Monday.

President Rouhani also stressed that maintaining integrity and unity among all political, religious and ethnic groups in Iraq is essential.

Referring to the role of clerics in guiding people and strengthening integrity among various groups in Iraq, Dr Rouhani added: “The Islamic Republic of Iran will stand by Iraqi nation and government in defending the holy shrines and combating terrorism”.

On the need to develop ties between Iran and Iraq in all fields, he also said: “Development and deepening of Tehran-Baghdad ties is beneficial to both nations and the region”.

During the meeting, the Leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq also briefed President Rouhani on the latest developments in Iraq in their fight against terrorism and ISIS, as well as political, economic and security issues.

Seyyed Ammar al-Hakim also appreciated Iran’s significant role in Iraq’s combat against terrorists and stressed that the historic victory in Fallujah was the result of unity and integrity of all political, popular and military forces of Iraq.
