President at a press conference in Urmia:

Urmia Lake’s status now stable/Groundwork set for prosperity, development in W. Azerbaijan/Gov’t put efforts on fostering export

West Azerbaijan has a great number of potentials and capabilities as a province that shares border with 3 countries in the region, said President Rouhani at a press conference in Urmia on Tuesday.

“Inaugurating and launching 369 plans and projects in West Azerbaijan has set the groundwork for prosperity and development in the region,” added Rouhani.

He continued: “Due to being neighbours with 3 countries in the region, West Azerbaijan has a strategic and very significant role and in the session of the development of the province, we discussed on how to make these borders more active”.

He also said: “We are witnessing an exemplary unity and integrity in West Azerbaijan”.

“The government has put restoration of Urmia Lake in its agenda from its early days in office and because of that, we are witnessing that the lake is in stable status,” continued the President.

Dr Rouhani also referred to the inauguration of Mahabad Petrochemical Complex as a big step in implementing great plans in the western part of the country.

“Overall, a great number of projects have been put in the agenda”, he said, referring to investments made on water and agriculture.

He said: “The government has decided to equip 28000 hectares of agricultural lands with modern irrigation systems”.

We have decided to encourage and foster export in different ways, said the President, adding: “One of the greatest achievements of the 11th government was that for the first time in 60 years, our non-oil exports exceeded imports”.

On the government’s plans to bring prosperity and reduce poverty and unemployment, he said: “This year, nearly $4.6 billion in loans has been allocated for activating 7000 production centres and manufacturing firms and we will present good figures to the people until the end of the current year”.

Answering a question about tourism, President Rouhani said: “In tourism, one very important issue is security; something which is in its best condition here. The hospitable West Azerbaijan people’s unity and empathy is itself a tourist attraction”.

In reference to measures taken to rise employment, he said: “If we want to create jobs for our youths, we need to take some points into consideration. One is modern technologies and today the government supports roughly 28000 knowledge-based companies”.
