Tehran-Zagreb ties to boost in all fields/Croatia can be a gate for Iran’s connection with EU

Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Croatia stressed serious resolve by both sides to deepen and cement mutual ties and also regional and international cooperation between Tehran and Zagreb, especially in combating terrorism.

During the press conference that was held on Wednesday, Dr Rouhani described Croatia as friend of Iran in the Balkans and added: “Iran recognised Croatia immediately after its independence and relations between the two countries have been friendly afterwards”.

“Due to having historical and cultural bonds with Iran and its position and geographical location, Croatia can be a gate for connecting Iran with the European Union and is very important for us in this respect,” he continued.

Referring to limitations made by the sanctions in the last several years, Dr Rouhani said: “In the course of this visit, we decided to further boost relations between the two countries in different economic fields such as energy and transportation”.

“The presence of a high-ranking economic delegation from Croatia indicates political resolve by the government of that country to develop economic ties with Iran,” continued the President.

Mentioning capacities of both countries for development of ties and forming joint ventures, Dr Rouhani said: “We also discussed Iran’s capabilities in the field of technological and engineering services and investment capacities in technology”.

“The two sides underscored willingness to develop scientific, technological and academic ties, in addition to economic issues,” continued the President.

Dr Rouhani also said that he discussed tourism, regional issues and terrorism with his Croatian counterpart.

He also described the move by the President of Croatia in having the Grand Mufti of Zagreb in her delegation as “respect to Islam”.

During the meeting, President of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović said that her visit to Tehran is a turning point in development of relations between the two countries, especially in economic fields and added: “Economic cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Croatia are not satisfying and today there is better atmosphere for developing ties and we should use it”.

She went on mentioning Iran’s goals for modernisation of its industry and economic infrastructures and continued: “Companies of the Republic of Croatia can cooperate with Iranian companies in all of these fields”.

“Croatia can be a very good path for transfer of Iran’s energy to the EU,” she added.

The President of Croatia also referred to cooperation between the two countries on regional and international issues and said: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has a key role in the region and Croatia, as a European country, supports Iran’s measures in lowering tensions in the region”.

“Croatia will continue its cooperation with Iran to uproot terrorism and extremism, especially in countries such as Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq,” she continued.

President Grabar-Kitarović also said: “We are very happy that our relations with Muslims are in great levels”.

On JCPOA, she said: “JCPOA will result in better relations of Iran with the countries of the world and Croatia fully supports further development of Iran’s ties with the European Union”.
