President at the meeting of high-ranking delegations of Iran and South Korea:

We should make efforts to realise Tehran-Seoul strategic ties/Helping global peace, stability a political, human task for all

Stressing ample capacities and opportunities for development of ties between political, economic and cultural ties between Iran and South Korea, Dr Rouhani underscored using the capacities to realise Tehran-Seoul strategic ties.

Speaking at the meeting of high-ranking delegations of Iran and South Korea on Monday in Tehran, President Rouhani said: “Long, historical and amicable relations between the two nations is one of the chief bases for developing ties”.

Dr Rouhani also underscored the two countries’ good relations during the past 54 years, and said: “This visit will further deepen ties in all areas between Tehran and Seoul”.

“We should try to turn the two countries’ bonds into strategic ones with regional cooperation,” said Dr Rouhani, describing South Korea as an important country in Eastern Asia.

He also emphasised that the two countries’ private sectors should boost cooperation with one another.

On joint projects in various fields such as industry and mining and energy, he said: “The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to draft a framework for long-term and strategic Tehran-Seoul relations in order to develop investment and joint economic activities”.

Sketching out plans for increasing economic ties to $18 billion at the first stage, and $30 billion in mid-term, President Rouhani said: “We should make attempts to achieve developed relations and increase cooperation…and remove the obstacles”.

He also referred to cooperation in the field new technologies and added: “Iran and South Korea can have good cooperation with each other in several fields such as the environment, industry and agriculture”.

“In the field of tourism and creating the right conditions for development of tourism, such as building hotels and establishing direct Tehran-Seoul ties, we should plan and make efforts,” continued Rouhani.

In reference to cultural commonalities between the two countries, he said: “We should facilitate this through further academic, cultural and artistic cooperation between the two nations and governments”.

Welcoming the announcing of year 2017 as the year of culture between the two countries, he said: “This creates a good atmosphere for strengthening cooperation between the two countries”.

Dr Rouhani also referred to southern Iranian ports, singling out Jask port on the shore of Oman Sea as a good region for joint Iran-South Korea investment, he said: “The two countries can have joint activities in different sectors such as energy, petrochemicals and steel”.

He then underlined further bonds between Iranian and South Korean banks as the facilitating factor for better economic ties.

“Trying to maintain and strengthen regional and international peace and stability is a political and human task for all countries,” he said, describing South Korea’s security and stability as very important to Iran.

President Rouhani also described weapons of mass destruction as a threat to the humanity and added: “We believe that the world should become free from any kind of WMD”.

On the necessity of preserving peace and stability in the region, especially in Iraq, Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan, Rouhani said: “With confrontations and killings being ended in these countries and eradicating terrorism, we hope to witness peace, stability, security and development in the region”.

In another part of his statements, Dr Rouhani expressed Iran’s readiness to carry out joint actions to ensure stability and development in Afghanistan.

During the same press conference, President of South Korea Park Geun-hye expressed hope that this trip provides a new bedrock for historic momentum in development of ties between the two countries”.

She also called for further boosting cooperation and said: “Iran enjoys experienced and young human resources and manpower and South Korea possesses financial and technological capabilities which can be used to develop and advance ties between the two countries”.

Referring to Dr Rouhani’s statement at the UN General Assembly that said “Development of economic partnership brings sustainable security and turn the region into a centre for peace” she said: “South Korea agrees with this view of the Islamic Republic of Iran and can be a good partner for Tehran in doing so”.

President Park also said that direct Tehran-Seoul fights will be established in the near future.

She then hailed Iran’s efforts and role in promoting peace and stability in the region, especially in helping and supporting Afghan refugees.
