President in a meeting with Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army:

Muslim countries should unite against terrorists/Both countries’ armed forces’ cooperation backs stability in the region/ The need for Pakistan’s more attempts in maintaining border security

President Rouhani received Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army General Raheel Sharif at his accommodation in Islamabad.

In this meeting which happened on Saturday, President Hassan Rouhani referred to close and historical defence cooperation between the armies of both countries and said: “Pakistan is our strategic depth and Iran is Pakistan’s strategic depth and this reality has been proved during hard times”.

He added: “The governments of Iran and Pakistan are determined to develop mutual and regional ties and this fact requires that along with development of ties between the two governments, defence sectors of both countries have closer relations with each other”.

Congratulating the Pakistan Army for its successes in combating terrorism, he added: “Pakistan’s more serious and stronger resolve against those who are trying to disturb our common borders turns these regions into cooperation and security borders”.

“Regarding this issue, we hope to witness security agreement between the two countries and also more cooperation between the armed forces of both countries in fighting terrorism and maintaining and boosting security at common borders as soon as possible; a process that can contribute to stability and development of the region” he continued.

Dr Rouhani added: “We are willing to strengthen cooperation between the two countries’ armies for the benefit of both”.

“Solving issues in the region is merely possible through constructive political discussions and it is time for the Muslim countries to unite against terrorists and act in an integrated manner” continued Rouhani.

He went on saying: “Iran and Pakistan, as two important and effective countries in the region, can have joint efforts in realisation of this matter”.

In this meeting, the Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army said that Pakistan Army supports development of Tehran-Islamabad cooperation which benefits both nations.

Vowing to continue fighting terrorists, General Raheel Sharif said: “I assure you that we will soon witness political developments in borders between Iran and Pakistan and we will do our utmost to implement the contents of security agreement”.

“We will not let any action against Iran to be carried out from Pakistani soil” he added.

On regional issues, he said: “We should try to strengthen cooperation and unity amongst Muslim countries and Iran and Pakistan can be pioneers of this matter”.
