In this meeting, the President said: “The Middle East region has faced with numerous crises including terrorism and draught which have displaced thousands of innocent people and faced millions with insecurity. The UN’s duty, as well as world powers and countries of the region in dealing with these crises and calamities is heavy”.

The President also talked about terrorist acts and creation and intensifying insecurity in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq and said: “Efforts in fighting terrorism should be harmonised, putting an end to interventions and actions by some countries, particularly in Yemen and Syria”.

Rouhani described the main efforts in reaching a sustainable peace in Yemen as being ‘put an immediate stop to military intervention and bombing, the transfer of humanitarian aid including food and medicine, and start Yemeni-Yemeni discussions without foreign intervention.

Criticising some countries’ intervention in Syria, Rouhani said: “Some states are seeking to overthrow the central government in Syria before fighting terrorism. Whereas to eradicate terrorism, the first step should be to strengthen the central government, which is responsible for the fight; of course some countries have become closer to this reality”.

Dr Rouhani also mentioned the nuclear discussions and said: “All sides have cooperated and shown good will in reaching the agreement and we will continue to cooperate with the IAEA like we have so far and we hope that some remaining ambiguities in the coming weeks be fully resolved”.

“Unfortunately the Saudi government does not fully cooperate in dealing with the missing persons’ issues, transferrin the injured and the bodies of the dead. It is necessary that the Secretary-General remind the Riyadh government of its legal and humanitarian duties” added Rouhani.

The UN Secretary-General also condoled the death of Iranian pilgrims in Mina incident and said: “The mass media widely cover your travel to the United Nations and this is indicator of your stance in having a constructive role in the region”.

Ban also pointed to the nuclear agreement and expressed hope over its swift implementation.

He also discussed the ways to achieving peace and security in the region, particularly in Yemen and Syria.

President Rouhani has already proposed the draft resolution of WAVE (World Against Violence and Extremism) in the UN General Assembly on December 17, 2013 and it was passed by consensus.
