President attends the Summit of Sustainable Development Goals

President Hassan Rouhani attended the Summit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the UN headquarters after meeting with senior managers and executives of the American media.

The three-day SDGs Summit will be attended by heads of the member countries from Sep. 25 to Sep. 27 and Dr Rouhani is set to deliver a speech on Saturday.

In this summit, the draft outcome document of the Post-2015 Development Agenda which was agreed upon by the member countries on 2 August after two years of negotiation will be formally adopted.

The document consists of an introduction, followed by four sections of ‘Declaration’, ‘17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets’, ‘means of implementation and renewed global partnership’, and ‘framework for review and follow-up’.

The Islamic Republic of Iran will also attend the meetings on the agenda and propose its scientific ideas. A committee will be tasked to follow up the procedures based on the stated regulations.

The Agenda states that extremism and terrorism are detrimental to the processes relating sustainable development, stopping the process or make it regress.

The Agenda also underscores some challenges like depletion of natural resources and reverse of the effects of environmental degradation like desertification, drought, land degradation, fresh water shortages and decreasing of biodiversity.
