President condoles deaths of pilgrims in Mina stampede/President: We will pursue the rights and interests of the Iranian people

President Hassan Rouhani expressed grief over the deaths of Hajj pilgrims in a stampede in Mina, saying: “After landing in New York, I immediately made a telephone call to my First Vice-President and ordered the cabinet to convene and form a special committee to probe into different aspects of the traumatic event”.

President described the incident as very painful and heart-breaking and said: “We demand Saudi Arabia’s cooperation with Iranian Hajj Headquarters and the Supreme Leader’s permanent delegation to Mecca and Medina in order to deliver medical help to Iranian pilgrims”.

“I have tasked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to contact the Saudi authorities and take necessary actions” added Rouhani.

Rouhani also talked about the aims of attending the 70th annual session of UN General Assembly and said: “We will follow almost the same goals as the two previous visits, reviewing the most important international and regional issues and pursuing the rights and interests of the Iranian people”.

“Today based on the arisen circumstances, we have to seek development and constructive interaction with the world more than ever and, at the same time, pursue international and regional issues with the aim of achieving lasting peace and stability” said Rouhani.

Speaking about the regional issues, Rouhani said: “We hope to raise regional issues including those of Yemen, Syria, and Iraq in our discussions with the heads of different countries and reach fruitful and constructive decisions in dispelling insecurity and establishing security and stability in the region”.
