Iran, Uzbekistan presidents call for closer ties

Iran and Uzbekistan presidents on Thursday have emphasized their determination to promote Tehran-Tashkent relations.

President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov in Tajikistan’s capital city of Dushanbe said Tehran and Tashkent should tap into their “numerous economic potentials” in an effort to broaden bilateral ties.
President Rouhani added that Uzbekistan, as a friendly country, enjoys a significant position in Iran’s foreign policy, and the ground should be prepared for the expansion of bilateral cooperation in line with the interests of both countries.
Referring to Iran's geostrategic status in the region, Dr.Rouhani said that Iran is always a safe route for transit of commodities for regional countries, including Uzbekistan.
On Iran's interaction with the Western governments, the Iranian president said that Iran considers interaction to serve national interest and that Iran will never give up its legitimate rights.
In the meantime, the president of Uzbekistan voiced his country's readiness to strengthen economic cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Karimov proposed that a joint committee be formed to pursue the implementation of agreements already signed between the two countries.
He hailed President Rouhani's moderation, prudence and tolerance as a big lesson for world politicians.
"I have been monitoring the situation in Iran over the past one year and saw that under your administration, Iran has made great progress."
President Rouhani invited President Karimov to visit Iran which was welcomed by the Uzbek President.
