Iranian government keen on relations with European Union on mutual interests

President Hassan Rouhani and visiting EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton discussed issues of mutual interests in a meeting here on Sunday.

President said that the Iranian government is keen on longstanding and traditional relations with the European Union on mutual interests.
Iran regards the visit to Tehran of the EU foreign policy chief as indication of determination of the European Union to follow a new approach, President Rouhani said.
President Rouhani said that those relations between Iran and European countries are traditional as both sides share common interests and objectives.
He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is willing to develop economic cooperation with the European states.
Pointing to her visit to Iran, the EU top official, for her part, said she carries the goodwill message of 28 European countries.
Ashton added that her visit represented the first opportunity for holding talks with Iranian officials on topics other than just the nuclear issue, noting that this could be a new beginning in the expansion of ties between Iran and the EU.
She said the EU completely acknowledges the important role of Iran in the region and is ready to develop more dynamic ties with the country.
