President Ahmadinejad said in a meeting with American university students and lecturers on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says an improvement in the Iran-US relations will be possible if Washington changes its behavior toward Tehran.

“The American decision makers should accept that Iran is standing on its own feet and that the situation won’t return to what it was in the past,” said Dr.Ahmadinejad.

“There is a possibility that the ties [between Iran and the US] would improve if they (the Americans) took confidence-building measures, condemn threats against Iran, let the nuclear issue be resolved through understanding and allow the settlement of the financial issues between the two countries,” the president added.

Pointing to the US interference in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic and Washington’s support for the former despotic regime in Iran, President Ahmadinejad said the Iranian nation expected the US, as a country claiming to be the main advocate of democracy, to back their revolution, but the US instead hatched numerous plots against Iran within the first year of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

President also criticized the US sheltering of the terrorists that assassinated Iranian officials and people as well as its full support for executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein during Iraq’s imposed war against the Islamic Republic.

He said the US continued with its ‘hostile’ policy toward the Islamic Republic after the Iran-Iraq war in the form of sanctions and pressures.

Commenting on Zionist regime’s threats against Iran, President Ahmadinejad said Iran was not concerned about the threats, which he said lacked strategic significance.

He described the Zionist regime as the source of tension in the Middle East as it has been threatening regional countries, displacing Palestinians and engaging in the occupation of parts of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.

Zionist regime has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran's nuclear facilities under the false allegation that Iran pursues a non-civilian nuclear energy program.

Iran has rejected the allegation over its nuclear activities and has promised a crushing response to any military strike against its territory.
