Speaking on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the 38th Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the 28th World Book of the Year Award, Dr Hassan Rouhani expressed satisfaction that despite the limitations caused by the coronavirus pandemic, he could attend the ceremony, saying, "If it weren't for books, we would almost be cut off from the past".

The president described the book as a colossal box that holds the secrets and news of the past, adding, "If it were not for books, our series of sciences and historical knowledge would not exist, and this would be a great loss to humanity".

Pointing out that today a new type of book and writing called cyberspace has been created, Dr Rouhani said, "Undoubtedly, one of the great, influential human inventions in the present age is cyberspace. Cyberspace has revolutionised the world and is the foundation for progress in other areas".

The President stated, "Books are not only carriers of scientific developments, but also carriers of social developments. For example, the social transformations in the Constitutional period began with books, and the book of the late Naeini was very effective and decisive in creating that great movement".

Dr Rouhani pointed out, "The Islamic Movement and Revolution itself began with the written declarations of a marja and continued, and jurisprudence and the evolution of Shiite jurisprudence owe a lot to books and writing".

Stating that many books are our guide for the future at different times, Dr Rouhani added, "Is it possible for the poems of Sa'adi, Hafez and Mowlana to get old?"

The president said, "If human could predict future developments and, for example, could predict coronavirus three years ago in a book, how much could this issue affect human life today?"

Dr Rouhani stressed the need to honor writers, authors and researchers who are involved in the excellence of culture and knowledge of society, and stated, "Such celebrations bring the culture of nations closer together. We must work hard to achieve this goal, which is to increase the demand for books and promote the culture of reading".

The President expressed hope that because of the Islamic Revolution and the developments that have taken place today, we will witness a great movement so that society can use new ideas more and better.
