Speaking in a telephone call with the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday, Dr Hassan Rouhani stressed the importance of peace, stability and security in the region, and said, "Stability and security can be the bedrock of development, and our region cannot withstand instability and a new war".

Referring to the long-standing disputes between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Karabakh issue and the need to find a solution within the framework of international law and territorial integrity, Dr Rouhani said, "It is important for us to stop these conflicts, and we expect the two countries to take a step in this direction with tact and restraint".

Emphasising that war is not necessarily the solution to resolving problems, tensions and disputes, the President said, "Any foreign intervention in this matter will not only not help resolve the problem, but also prolong conflicts and tensions and prolong the situation and make it more complicated".

Referring to the importance and long history of Iran's relations with Azerbaijan and Armenia based on a common history and culture, Dr Rouhani announced the readiness of the Islamic Republic of Iran to play any constructive role desired by the two friendly and neighbouring countries and said, "We wish an urgent end to the conflict and we should all seek to resolve the issues of the region through politics and international regulations".

Referring to the recent developments in the military conflict with Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of Armenia said that any tension and conflict would be to the detriment of all countries in the region and welcomed any practical initiative to stop the violence.

Nikol Pashinyan expressed concern over any foreign interference in the dispute between the country and Azerbaijan.
