President at the meeting of high-ranking delegations of Iran and Azerbaijan:

Deepening Tehran-Baku ties benefits not only the two nations, but also region/North-South Transit Route means more convenient, cheaper, shorter route for the two countries, region and even Asia, Europe and Africa/Joint ventures must be more profitable

Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan welcomed the fast pace of developing relations between Tehran and Baku, and stressed that they were determined to deepen these relations, which are to the benefit of not only the two nations, but also the peoples of the region.

Speaking on Wednesday at the meeting of the high-ranking Iranian and Azerbaijani delegations in Baku, Dr Hassan Rouhani said: "I am glad that with the extensive efforts of senior officials from both countries, we are witnessing very good outcomes and this cooperation is in the interest of not only the two nations but also the entire region”.

Dr Rouhani added: “The North-South Transit Route, which the two countries are currently participating in as part of the implementation of the Rasht-Astara Railway project, means a more convenient, cheaper and shorter route for the two countries, the countries of the region, and even for Asia, Europe and Africa, indicating that our cooperation is in the interest of the peoples of the region and the world”.

The president also referred to the start of operation of some of these projects that are set to begin on Thursday, saying: “Opening of these projects, which are the result of joint efforts and investment, shows that the two countries are determined to develop bilateral and multilateral relations”.

Efforts should be made to make joint ventures more profitable, Dr Rouhani said, highlighting joint ventures in car production and saying: “The manufactured products should be able to compete in the regional car market”.

The president described establishment of free trade between the two countries as a step in the direction of high mobility in economic relations between the two countries, adding: “First, it can begin with preferential tariffs for some items, and this can have a good effect on the volume of trade between the two countries”.

Dr Rouhani urged strengthening of banking cooperation between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan and announced readiness to use the national currency in trade between the two countries, adding: "Facilitating banking relations is the key to the development of relations in all fields”.

The President also called the Caspian Sea the sea of ​​development, peace and friendship and consolidation of brotherly relations between the two countries and emphasised: "Our new cooperation in the Caspian Sea means that we must take the best advantage of this God-given blessing bestowed upon its littoral countries”.

"Failure to decide means that a large asset will be locked up in this sea, and the two countries can use these assets through joint efforts and cooperation for the welfare and development of the two nations,” Dr Rouhani stated.

The president also urged strengthening of cooperation in scientific and cultural fields, adding: “Cooperation between the two countries in scientific and cultural fields and development of cooperation between universities and research centres, as well as travel between the two countries must be further emphasised”.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran also said: “Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan can strengthen their cooperation in the path to peace and security in the region and the world”.

The president expressed satisfaction over the defeat of ISIL terrorists in Iraq and Syria and said: “The fight against terrorism must continue more powerfully. The Islamic Republic of Iran seeks to strengthen stability and security in the region and eliminate any tension between the countries of the region and believes that the tensions in Yemen and Syria have a political solution and we are ready to engage in bilateral and multilateral efforts to strengthen regional stability and security”.

President of Azerbaijan expressed satisfaction with the leap in relations between Tehran and Baku, saying: “Implementation of the documents signed today make the horizons of relations between the two countries clearer”.

Ilham Aliyev stated: “The two countries' political and brotherly relations are a solid foundation for successful cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and energy, and the joint activities of Iran and Azerbaijan in projects like energy in the Caspian Sea and the Rasht-Astara Railway have further strengthened relations between the two countries, which are based on mutual trust and respect”.

“Common use of Caspian Sea resources, connection of the rail corridors of the north to the south and east and west are a great achievement for the two nations and the region,” he continued.

Aliyev called for increased joint investments in the development of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, adding: “Areas such as construction of freight terminals, automotive and pharmaceuticals are among the broad fields of cooperation between the two countries”.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan also supported Iran's policy to ensure peace and security in the region, adding: "Unfortunately, some countries outside the region have caused wars and killing through increasing their intervention, and we believe that no foreign troops should intervene in the internal affairs of the countries of the region".
