President at Mehrabad Airport:

Deepening ties with neighbours gov't key policy/Discussing bilateral, regional, int'l issues high on the agenda/Iran-Azerbaijan cooperation document on Caspian Sea oil, gas to be signed

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran left Tehran for Ashgabat on Tuesday at the official invitation of the President of the Republic of Turkmenistan.

Dr Rouhani was seen off at the airport by First Vice-President Dr Jahangiri and the Advisor to the Supreme Leader in International Affairs Dr Ali Akbar Velayati.

Speaking at Mehrabad Airport before leaving Tehran, President said: "One of the most important goals of the 11th Government was to establish closer ties with neighbouring countries, and this policy will be followed more closely in the 12th Government".

Mentioning that Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan share land and maritime borders with Iran, the President added: "Fortunately, our relations with Ashgabat ad Baku are at a good level, however, there are ample opportunities for development of ties in all fields, which must be taken the best advantage of".

"In this visit, we will discuss bilateral, regional and international issues, in addition to development of relations in economic and cultural fields," he continued.

Dr Rouhani added: "In addition to deepening traditional commercial and economic relations with Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan, the issue of regional transit and connecting the southern waters to Central Asia and the Caucasus are very important, with regard to the fact that our linking point to Central Asia and Caucasus is through Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan".

Dr Rouhani added: "In addition to the transit routes, there are two projects of connecting Chabahar-Zahedan railway linking Chabahar to Central Asia and a joint Iran-Azerbaijan project to connect Rasht railway to Astara connecting us to the Caucasus, Russia and Europe are underway".

The President also said that the document on cooperation of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan to construct Rasht railway to Astara will be signed on this visit, adding: "The two countries' agreement on oil and gas in the Caspian Sea will also be signed, which is an important document for development of economic relations between Tehran and Baku".

Stating that businessmen and representatives of the private sector of Iran, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan have been talking and discussing cooperation between the two countries' private sectors, he said: "Dialogue on inclusive relations in different industrial, agricultural, health, and tourism sectors are other issues that will be discussed on the visit".

President is accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Vice-President in Economic Affairs and ministers of Petroleum, Roads and Urban Development, Industry, Mines and Trade, and Energy.
