In order to take part in the 72nd UNGA Session;

President heads for New York

President Rouhani left Tehran for New York on Sunday in order to take part in the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Dr Rouhani was seen off at the airport by First Vice-president Dr Jahangiri and International Affairs Advisor to the Supreme Leader Dr Velayati.

Before leaving for New York, Dr Rouhani told reporters at the airport: "The annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is being held with heads of many countries attending, is a great opportunity for delivering Iranian nation's voice to the world".

"In addition to addressing the General Assembly, we will have meetings with Iranian elites residing in the United States, religious leaders and clerics, American foreign policy elites, heads of American think-tanks, and senior editors of international media and the press," he continued.

Dr Rouhani went on to say: "This session and its marginal programmes are a good opportunity to explain different things to the people of the US and the world because the propaganda about Islamic countries, including Iran, are far from reality".

Referring to meetings with heads of some countries, including Belgium, Austria, France, Japan, Pakistan, South Africa, and Bolivia, the president pointed out: "At the summit, many countries from different continents and we will talk about bilateral relations and regional and global issues, as well as the crisis of Myanmar".

"Usually, other summits are held on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly and this time, the Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will be held about Myanmar and another about climate and environment," Dr Rouhani continued.

He added: "Today, we are in conditions that we should take advantage of the atmosphere to deepen Iran's ties with the world and, as the Supreme Leader stressed, we are willing to have constructive cooperation with friend countries in the region and the world".

"It has been proved by experience that the issues of the region do not have a military solution and they must be resolved through political ways and this requires that everybody take part in it. To combat terrorism, all countries must join hands to establish peace and security instead of terror and violence," the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran continued.

He also said: "Today, there is a consensus in the world about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), believing that it is beneficial for security, stability and development in the region and the world".

Rouhani continued: "Our region has suffered from many tragedies but the fact that today in Myanmar, hundreds of thousands of people are displace and some dead, houses are burnt and the violence continues, is among the most tragic tragedies in the history of the region".

"Everyone must condemn the move by the government and army of Myanmar and help the displaced as much as they can," he continued.

Dr Rouhani also said: "One of the advantages of the United Nations General Assembly is that we can have meetings and discuss with many heads of state and attend summits in a short time and I hope these meetings and discussions have good results for our country".
